About Totti
Having been a member of the Circus Friends Association of Great Britain for more than 40 years, and a frequent visitor to circuses in mainland Europe for the last 20 or so, I have seen many good clowns - and a lot of bad "clowns". There is no doubt that Totti Alexis belongs in the former category. His clowning straddles the line between traditional and modern, and his routines are original. I have seen him work both silently and with speech, and although it does help to understand what is being said, his comedy can be followed without that knowledge. At the Lille Festival, where he appeared for 3 consecutive years, he did not repeat any material, and yet he continues to develop new routines, some involving his wife and young son. His tried and tested acts always seem fresh, as if he's making it up as he goes along. But he isn't! He understands what works. Or, at least, what works for him. The presence of Totti Alexis in a circus performance could easily persuade me to go and see the show, especially as I like the man as well as the clown.
