Born on quite an ordinary day, in quite an ordinary year, in quite an ordinary delivery room. Absolutely less ordinary, however, were Totti Alexis’s family origins and the moment when the curtain of his life opened up for him. At exactly 11:04 p.m. on a winter-evening he saw the light of day. At the same time and several hundred kilometers away, his father was delighting the masses at the French Circus “Pinder-Jean Richard”, making children of all ages roar with laughter. There are no records if the hospital staff laughed, too when seeing the little baby. Records indicate, however, that Totti is the fifth generation of the well-known Spanish clown family Alexis and thus from this very moment on, he was what would determine his future path through life: A child of laughter!

Having been a member of the Circus Friends Association of Great Britain for more than 40 years, and a frequent visitor to circuses in mainland Europe for the last 20 or so, I have seen many good clowns - and a lot of bad "clowns". There is no doubt that Totti Alexis belongs in the former category. His clowning straddles the line between traditional and modern, and his routines are original. I have seen him work both silently and with speech, and although it does help to understand what is being said, his comedy can be followed without that knowledge. At the Lille Festival, where he appeared for 3 consecutive years, he did not repeat any material, and yet he continues to develop new routines. His tried and tested acts always seem fresh, as if he's making it up as he goes along. But he isn't! He understands what works. Or, at least, what works for him. The presence of Totti in a circus performance could easily persuade me to go and see the show, especially as I like the man as well as the clown.
